Holiday Spirit Shines at Mat-Su College: Makers Market Craft Fair Debuts December 5–6

Two-day event to feature 63 vendors, a silent auction, and a campus filled with holiday cheer

PALMER, Alaska — This December, Mat-Su College will transform into a hub of creativity and holiday spirit as it hosts the inaugural Makers Market Craft Fair, a festive two-day celebration of local talent and community connection. The event, free and open to the public, will take place on Friday, December 5, from 3 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, December 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

With 63 vendors already signed up, Makers Market promises a vibrant mix of handmade goods that reflect the skill and imagination of the Valley’s artisans. Shoppers will find everything from jewelry, textiles, and pottery to paintings, seasonal décor, and unique gifts that carry the unmistakable touch of the maker’s hand. Just in time for the holidays!

“This event is about more than shopping—it’s about celebrating the creativity of our community,” said Michelle Mishaan, Fine Arts Professor at Mat-Su College and coordinator of the event. “When you support local art, you’re helping to keep stories, traditions, and innovation alive.”

In addition to browsing the vendor booths, attendees can take part in a silent auction, featuring items generously donated by participating artists. All proceeds will benefit the Mat-Su College Art Department, directly supporting student opportunities, workshops, and programs that enrich the campus and community. A gift-wrapping station will also be available for donations, adding convenience and holiday cheer.

The weekend will be even more festive as the Glenn Massay Theater, located on the Mat-Su College campus, hosts special programming at the same time as the holiday craft fair: Sonja's Studio of Performing Arts' annual winter recital performances. Between the craft fair and the theater’s events, visitors can expect a campus alive with holiday energy, music, art, and community spirit. “Art has the power to brighten our long winters with hope and connection,” Mishaan added. “We invite everyone to come share in the spirit of the season and be part of the glow.”

Over the next two months, organizers will also be spotlighting many of the featured crafters and artisans on social media, giving the community a chance to meet the makers and learn the stories behind their work before the big weekend. Readers are encouraged to scan the QR code and follow both the Mat-Su College Fine Arts Facebook page and the official Mat-Su College page to keep up with announcements, artist features, and event details.

Whether you’re looking for meaningful holiday gifts, supporting local artists, or simply searching for a warm and welcoming holiday tradition, the Makers Market Craft Fair offers something for everyone. With 40 vendors, a lively campus atmosphere, and plenty to see and do, Mat-Su College is set to become the Valley’s holiday destination this December.
